{"id":6,"date":"2007-09-10T17:16:31","date_gmt":"2007-09-10T21:16:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/providenceworkingwaterfront.org\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2013-08-28T14:48:45","modified_gmt":"2013-08-28T18:48:45","slug":"economic-impact","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/providenceworkingwaterfront.org\/index.php\/providences-working-waterfront\/economic-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"Economic Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\"><strong>Providence<\/strong><\/st1:city><strong>\u2019s working waterfront is a key economic resource for <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Rhode Island<\/st1:state> and greater southern <st1:place w:st=\"on\">New England<\/st1:place>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in\" type=\"square\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Responsible      for hundreds of millions of dollars in <a href=\"https:\/\/providenceworkingwaterfront.org\/index.php\/2008\/06\/09\/econ-impact\/\">total economic impact<\/a> for the      region.<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Over      2,000 ships per year use the port to offload salt, cement, asphalt, and      petroleum products, and load up with recycled metal for export to      international markets.<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Over 9      million tons of cargo move through the port every year.<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">One of      the top 50 ports in the <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">United        States<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Recently      completed $65 million 40-foot deep water channel dredging project      specifically undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to meet      growing regional demand for shipping services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><strong>Providence<\/strong><\/st1:place><\/st1:city><strong>\u2019s working waterfront is responsible for thousands of jobs.<o:p><\/o:p><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in\" type=\"square\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Hundreds      of direct employment jobs.<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Thousand      of multiplier jobs (tradesmen, truck drivers, service technicians, etc.).<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">One of      the few remaining sources of well paid blue-collar jobs in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:state w:st=\"on\">Rhode Island<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Port-sector      workers earn, on average, about $50,000.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Providence\u2019s working waterfront is the main source of heating oil for Rhode Island, Southeast Connecticut, and Central and <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Southeast Massachusetts<\/st1:place>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in\" type=\"square\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Port      fuel terminals supply virtually all of the heating oil for <st1:state w:st=\"on\">Rhode Island<\/st1:state>, <st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Worcester<\/st1:placename>      <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype>, Cape Cod and the islands,      and eastern <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:state w:st=\"on\">Connecticut<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>      households and businesses.<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">There      are more than 450,000 oil heat customers in <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Rhode Island<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> alone.<strong><o:p><\/o:p><\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">Port      provides <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Rhode Island<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s      <em>only<\/em> source of residual heavy      fuel oil for hospitals, universities, commercial buildings, state and      municipal buildings, and utilities.<strong><o:p><\/o:p><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Providence\u2019s working waterfront is a key economic resource for Rhode Island and greater southern New England.
