{"id":100,"date":"2008-02-25T17:11:21","date_gmt":"2008-02-25T21:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/providenceworkingwaterfront.org\/index.php\/2008\/02\/25\/providence-is-a-possible-hub-for-short-sea-shipping\/"},"modified":"2018-12-18T14:33:26","modified_gmt":"2018-12-18T18:33:26","slug":"providence-is-a-possible-hub-for-short-sea-shipping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/providenceworkingwaterfront.org\/index.php\/2008\/02\/25\/providence-is-a-possible-hub-for-short-sea-shipping\/","title":{"rendered":"Providence is a possible hub for short sea shipping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s <em>Providence Business News<\/em> has an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbn.com\/stories\/29849.html\" target=\"_blank\">article about the potential for short sea shipping in the port of Providence<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> Advocates for short sea shipping \u2013 a regional alternative to long-haul trucking \u2013 want to see if Providence could be instrumental in restructuring regional shipping.<\/p>\n<p>Short sea shipping works like this: When imported materials headed for Rhode Island arrive at a large port, such as in New York Harbor, they would be kept in their overseas containers and moved to a smaller barge that would bring them directly to the Ocean State rather than being driven here on Interstate 95, said Robert Kunkel, chairman of Washington, D.C.-based Short Sea Cooperative Program (SCOOP)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an attempt to curb both pollution and traffic congestion caused by trucking, Kunkel said.
